Observations of 20 geomagnetic storms made at Beijing from 1966-1972 were examined in the light of recorded data on solar wind activities and Akasofu's solar wind-magnetosphere coupling function (1978), epsilon. Specific attention was given to establishing correlations between epsilon and the geomagnetic indices Kp and ap using three hour mean values. Data from five storms are reviewed in detail to show the significance of the correlation coefficients. The main phase of the storms was found to develop after epsilon reached a value of more than 4 x 10 to the 18th erg/sec. Energy transfer from the interplanetary medium to the magnetosphere was determined to form a dynamo, and the epsilon is the measure of the output.
