The composition of the cosmic rays in the 'knee' (~107 GeV/nucleus) region of the cosmic ray all- particle spectrum has consequences for astrophysical models of particle acceleration and propagation. Deep underground muon events recorded in the Soudan 2 detector have been used to infer the composition of cosmic rays in this 'knee' energy region through a comparison of the observed muon multiplicity distribution with the simulated distributions of three trial composition models. The observed muon multiplicity distribution favors a composition model with a substantial proton content in the energy region 8×105- 1.3×107 GeV/nucleus.
