An analysis is made of processes occurring in the vicinity of the leading front and core of the northwesterly traveling auroral bend formed in the auroral oval during the explosive phase of a magnetospheric substorm. A streamer model for the formation and motion of the bend is proposed which is analogous to the streamer mechanism of electric-discharge development in gases. This model can explain the direction and velocity of the bend motion, the nonuniform character of the motion, the electric-field structure in front of the bend, and the distribution of field-aligned currents at the head of the bend.
