The Utah State University Time Dependent Ionospheric Model (TDIM) produces detailed simulations of ionospheric structures during storm periods, provided that it is driven by a suitable model of the convection electric field during the storm. In recent work (eg, David et al [2011]) the University of Michigan's HEIDI model (Hot Electron and Ion Drift Integrator) has been used to drive the TDIM, and the results show that storm-time mid-latitude dayside enhancements can be successfully modeled in this manner. In addition to the dayside enhancements, which have been observed many times by GPS TEC receivers and ionosonde stations, the TDIM/HEIDI simulations for various storm periods have often produced another ionospheric density enhancement structure which is not part of the dayside feature (see Figure). This structure begins to form in the mid-latitude dusk sector, and elongates by extending in a sunward direction for several hours. There is a universal time dependence for its formation. The total electron content (TEC) within this structure is elevated relative to the background densities by a factor of 2 or more. This feature may be related to ionospheric processes that have been given various names, such as Polarization Jet (PJ), Sub-Auroral Polarization Stream (SAPS), Storm Enhanced Density (SED), or Sub-Auroral Ion Drift (SAID). We use the TDIM/HEIDI model to investigate the conditions under which this feature is formed. ------------- Reference: David, M, J J Sojka, R W Schunk, M W Liemohn, A J Coster, Dayside Mid-Latitude Ionospheric Response to Storm-Time Electric Fields: A Case Study for 07 September 2002, submitted to J.
