The 'step-by-step' model presently developed for the study of adaptive telescopic optics system performance capitalizes on the finite time required for a wavefront-compensation system to successively complete wavefront detection, correction-command generation, and corrector-response procedures. The statistical optical transfer function of a wavefront-compensation system is evaluated on the basis of the step-by-step model. This function is associated with the structural function of the compensated wavefront; this in turn is related to detection error, corrector-setting errors, and the atmosphere's spatial response function.
