A statistical study of the equatorward soft electron boundary dynamics of the diffuse aurora indicates the boundary to be best fitted by means of AE index values averaged over the 5 hrs preceding measurements. It is suggested that such boundary inertia indicates the action of a polarization field braking the inward portion of the corresponding equatorial plasma during increasing magnetic activity, so that several successive perturbations are required to yield an inward displacement. Also indicated may be a weak wave-particle interaction during periods of decreasing magnetic activity.
