The field fluctuations detected by the GEO 2 spacecraft magnetometer after an electron beam was injected into the magnetosphere at geostationary earth orbit are discussed. The electrons were injected perpendicular to the field. The resonant shear Alfven waves generated by surface waves in the inhomogeneous magnetospheric plasma is considered. The electron beam experiment precipitated pulsation events which only appeared in the dayside magnetosphere. Most events were toroidal and linearly polarized, with a positive orientation angle in the forenoon and negative angle in the afternoon. Event frequency was correlated with plasma density. It is suggested that the fluctuations are fundamental mode eigenoscillations of field lines near the spacecraft and may be generated by solar wind driven surface waves at the magnetopause or low latitude boundary layer.
