A method for quantitative analysis of geomagnetic giant pulsations is described in some detail since it has not been used in previous geomagnetic investigations. This method gives a quantitative measure of the type and degree of polarization as well as the principal directions of the resultant vectors in each of three orthogonal planes. All giant pulsations recorded at the Kiruna Geophysical Observatory ([phi] = 67·8°N, [lambda] = 20·4°E) during 1963 have been analyzed by this method. The phase differences between each orthogonal component have been evaluated from crosscorrelation functions, while the mean period and bandwidth of the variations in each component have been determined from autocorrelation functions. The principal results of the analysis of these giant pulsations can be summarized as follows: 1. 1. A high degree of polarization exists. 2. 2. The pulsations are confined to a very narrow frequency-band. 3. 3. The orientation of the mean vector in the horizontal plane is remarkably constant; the orientation of the mean vector in the magnetic meridian plane displays a considerable variation. 4. 4. The variance of the Z-component is of the same magnitude as the variances of either of the horizontal components. From the last result, we conclude that any physical explanation of the phenomenon is inadequate if it is based solely on the field-line propagation of transverse hydromagnetic waves.
