We present spectroscopic observations of 36 asteroids, members of the Themis family. These observations were carried on at the European Southern Observatory in the wavelength range 4900 - 9200 Angstroms . Most of the objects present a spectra similar to C-type asteroids and some of them present indicative of aqueous alteration. We discuss the implications of these results on the formation and evolution of this family. Based on observations made with the 1.52~m telescope at the European Southern Observatory (La Silla, Chile) under the agreement with the CNPq/ Observatorio Nacional. Table A1 is available at the CDS via anonymous ftp 130.79.128.5 or http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html. Appendix A is only available at the journal, http://www.edpsciences.com
