When geomagnetic activity commences, sometimes the magnetosphere has a built up outer plasmasphere and sometimes it does not. The presence or absence of an outer plasmasphere may change the evolution of the solar-wind-driven magnetosphere. We investigate three things could differ owing to the effects of plasmaspheric plasma. (1) The high-mass-density plasmaspheric plasma may mass load magnetospheric convection. (2) The high-density plasmaspheric plasma could lead to enhanced loss of radiation-belt electrons. (3) The high-mass-density plasmaspheric plasma may choke reconnection at the dayside neutral line. Theoretical, experimental, and simulation evidence for all three processes are given.
