It is shown that the propagation of a solitary internal gravity wave in the F-region can be described by using the approximation of weak nonlinearity and a quasi-plane vertical wave-front. This makes it possible to obtain information on the entire set of parameters of a solitary internal gravity wave and its plasma wake when experimentally determining only one of the disturbance characteristics. Solitons of this type are observed in substorms with an energy yield in the auroral zone of approximately 10 to the 18th erg/sec.
