A sensor suitable for measuring the height profile of atomic oxygen in the atmosphere above 70 km is described. It consists of a thin film of silver deposited on a pyrex rod of dimensions sufficiently small to permit molecular flow transport to its surface at these altitudes. The instantaneous atom flux to the surface can be evaluated from the rate of change of the electrical resistance of the film. Laboratory calibrations on a series of such sensors indicate an accuracy of at least 25 per cent by simultaneous measurements with four sensors and increased accuracy with the use of additional sensors. Its small size simplicity, specificity for O-atoms, and modest power and telemetry requirements make these sensors most attractive for use in rocket and satellite instrument packages.
