Interplanetary Magnetic Field: Small-Scale Structure

Scientific paper

A method is proposed for determining the configurational characteristics of oblate ellipsoidal interplanetary magnetic clouds from solar flares by direct measurements of the magnetic field by spacecraft. The method is realized in application to the interplanetary disturbances observed during January - February, 1986 by the spacecraft Vega-1 and Vega-2. The coordinates of the apices, angles of inclination to the plane of the heliographic meridian, magnitudes of the semiaxes and positions of the effective centers of the clouds are established. The results of these determinations agree satisfactorily with the regions of certain appearance of shock waves as established by an independent indirect method.
