The microwave emission from solar thermal active regions is dependent in a complicated way on five parameters: the intensity of the magnetic field in the emission region; the propagation angle between the ray path and the magnetic field; the angle between the ray path and the vertical; and two factors, alpha and beta, which multiply respectively the electron density and the temperature profiles to obtain a family of possible profiles. On the assumption that the magnetic field along the ray path is constant inside the relatively thin emitting zone and that absorption is due to electron-ion collisions, these parameters are combined into a single parameter G, and the diagram of (brightness temperature/beta) vs G is plotted for a wavelength of 3.8 cm. This diagram and the basic chromospheric-coronal profiles for electron density and temperature enable one to obtain the brightness temperatures for the ordinary and extraordinary temperatures, and hence the degree of polarization, for any given combination of the five parameters.
