An algorithm for the sequential calculation of the partial derivatives of the gravitational potential of an inhomogeneous ellipsoid is developed which makes it possible to obtain a series expansion of this function. The corresponding recursive procedures are demonstrated. The coefficients of the Taylor series of the potential can be used for the stability analysis of libration points. Applications of the results are discussed.
