An extension of the Method of Averaging which employs the true anomaly as the fast variable is used in the long-term prediction of near-earth orbits perturbed by an oblate geopotential and atmospheric drag. A local representation of an analytic version of a previous atmospheric model is used to generate the density profile along the orbit. The present analytics are independent of the global density model; they allow the inclusion of the dominant gravity-drag coupling effects; and they resolve earlier convergence difficulties caused by series expansions in powers of the orbital eccentricity. The analytical averaging of the drag perturbations provides insights into the nature of atmospheric drag and its associated short-period oscillations.
