The generalized Roche model is used in an investigation of the self-similar flow of a gas, moving under the gravitational attraction of a central body of fixed mass, behind a spherical shock wave that is driven outward by a propelling contact surface into a quiet solar wind region. The total energy content between the inner expanding surface and the shock front increases with time. Attention is given to the problem of self-similar isothermal flow in a gas behind a spherical shock wave. A typical solar wind compression in interplanetary space is produced by the propulsion of an enhanced, fresh solar plasma after the onset of a flare, with total driven wave energy increasing with propagation distance from the sun.
