It is pointed out that the Freund-Rubin spontaneous compactification mechanism can only be made to operate if we djoin the assumption that the Kaluza-Klein vacuum is free of ``space-time'' singularities. The consequences of a possible breakdown of this condition, in the context of a full (non-perturbative) treatment of the theory, are briefly discussed.
