The development and first astronomical testing of a 'second generation' photon counting detector is described. The detector, which makes use of a microchannel plate intensifier fiber-optically coupled to a CCD detector, offers photon counting performance with excellent geometric and temporal stability. A novel approach to the real-time centroiding of the intensified photon events, and the associated treatment of valid or invalid events, is described. Other original features of the system, in particular the diagnostic 'frame freeze' mode and the time-resolved imaging mode, are summarized. The results of some early astronomical tests, made at the Nordic Optical Telescope, are presented.
