Luminous high-redshift quasars are one of the most powerful probes of the early universe. They provide the valuable sample to, e.g., probe the evolution and structure of cosmic reionization, study the formation and evolution of super-massive black holes and host galaxies, and reveal chemical enrichment of interstellar gas of galaxies as a result of cosmic star formation history. While the past extensive surveys have successfully discovered a handful of quasars at redshift z ~ 6, no quasars have been discovered to date beyond z=6.5 where dramatic cosmic evolutionary processes are taking place. Here we propose the Gemini-N/GMOS longslit spectroscopy of the high-redshift quasar candidates we have carefully selected, of which ~ 2 sources are expected to be undiscovered z ~ 7 quasars. The specific purpose of the proposed observation is twofold; (i) identifying high-redshift quasars among our candidates and investigating the associated spectral features such as H I absorption bands due to neutral intergalactic medium, and (ii) providing the detailed population analysis of our final candidates and the feedback to the pre-selection strategy, which will have a crucial importance in forthcoming surveys with extremely large data sets.
