A search for variable stars in the field of NGC 5694 revealed no candidates. A search in the field of NGC 6558 found 6 new variables within the tidal radius rι, in addition to 9 previously known, and 36 in the field outside this radius, in addition to 10 previously known. Nine of the variables within rι are RR Lyrae stars and at least five are probable cluster members. These five yield a horizontal branch blue magnitude of 16.8±0.08 mag and an approximate distance to the cluster of 6.6 kpc. The cluster is of Oosterhoff type I.
