Moderate resolution spectra of the 0 1 triplet feature near λ7770 Å have been obtained for 40 stars near the base of the giant branch in the globular cluster Ml 3 to determine the average abundance of oxygen in this cluster. Spectra were obtained with the KPNO Hydra fiber positioner and bench spectrograph and the Mayall 4-m telescope. The spectra of all 40 stars, which are of similar temperature and surface gravity near Teff=5300 K and log g=3.0, have been combined to produce a single spectrum with a signal-to-noise ratio of 300:1. The limiting (1(T) equivalent width of the O I feature (which is blended into a single, broadened line at a resolving power of 2500) is 9 mÅ. This equivalent width places an upper limit on the average oxygen abundance in relatively unevolved stars in M13. These data strongly suggest that [O/Fe] is solar or less in this cluster. The absence of an excess of oxygen in Ml 3 raises interesting questions concerning a) the role of mixing and stellar evolution in globular cluster giants, b) age determinations which assume an excess of oxygen, and c) the source of metal poor material for the formation of M13 which does not display an oxygen enhancement.
