We present results from an extensive HST spectroscopic study of UV absorption lines in the spectrum of the quasar B2 1028+131, which is associated with the cluster Abell 1030 (z=0.177). The proximity of this quasar allows stringent constraints to be placed upon column densities of absorbing material that may be either associated with the cluster or intervening along the line of sight. Our HST spectra were obtained with the FOS and GHRS, and extend from 1150 to 4780 Angstroms, thereby allowing the investigation of a wide range of elements and ionic species. We present a positive detection of a CIV absorption line associated with the redshift of the quasar, and combine this with constraints on other ions to investigate the physical state and possible abundances of the absorption system. Together with recent X-ray data, these results are discussed in the context of cooling flows and other physical properties of the ICM, as well as the implications for galaxy formation and the relative occurrence of Lyman-alpha forest systems at low redshift.
