The authors report an attempt to observe the diffuse interstellar features at 5780 and 5797 Å in the coma of comet Halley while it was occulting a bright early-type star. No significant absorption was found, placing an upper limit on the column density of absorbers about an order of magnitude lower than interstellar values for stars of low reddening. An apparently real, though weak, cometary absorption feature was observed at 5820 Å. The authors have been unable to identify this feature.
