We propose to search for stars behind planetary nebulae and novae shells. The eventual goal of this survey is an analysis of the structure of small-scale condensations within planetary nebulae and novae shells through an examination of the spectra of such background stars, specifically the strength of the Na I-D nebular absorption. Repeated observations will allow the time evolution of such condensations to be studied at an unprecedented resolution.
