We propose to use the HST Faint Object Camera to perform a simple --- yet fundamental --- observational test to probe the mass spectrum of the most massive stars in physically different environments. We have selected a sample of HII regions in M31, with metallicities in the range 0.3 - 2 solar, with the objective to determine the upper mass cutoff as a function of metallicity. The observations will exploit the high resolution characteristics of the FOC and its UV sensitivity, to construct color- magnitude diagrams of the selected regions to be compared to theoretical models derived with a population synthesis code developed by our group. Syntethic isochrones will be generated and compared to the observations. This program will address fundamental issues, such as the effect of the chemical environment during formation on the upper end of the mass spectrum, and the reliability of indirect stellar indicators of massive stars, such as ionizing fluxes, in distant galaxies where massive stars are no longer resolvable. The results will be of immediate relevance to our understanding of the the physical processes operating during the star-formation process and the massive stellar content of galaxies with active star formation.
