Recent models of the stability, destabilization and subsequent rise of toroidal flux ropes stored immediately beneath the base of the solar convective envelope indicate that the zonal order of the most unstable mode is a function of storage latitude and magnetic field strength. Taken at face value, this would suggest that large-scale symmetries should be apparent in the distribution of longitudes of emergence for active regions. We are using the Mt Wilson sunspot dataset (coverage extending from 1917 to 1985) to establish observational support (or lack thereof) for this conjecture. In this contribution we discuss our method of analysis, and present preliminary results for a few activity cycles.
