Nine nearby galaxies are being surveyed using the VLA in order to identify compact radio sources. These compact radio sources are supernova remnants (SNRs), HII regions, and background sources. Radio observations of SNRs and HII regions are important to furthering the understanding of the evolution of galaxies. SNRs are involved in cosmic ray production, shock physics and the acceleration of particles, and interactions with the ISM. Radio observations of HII regions do not suffer from extinction by dust, unlike Hα . HII regions are sites of star formation and interactions between stars and the ISM. We report the preliminary results of 6 and 20 cm VLA observations of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946. Over 100 sources in NGC 6946 have been identified and the statistical results are discussed.
