An analysis of the observed properties of the Saturn rings is used to suggest a single solution for two problems: the problem of the width of the Cassini division and the problem of the cause of the immersion of a former satellite of Saturn into a zone of tidal destruction. A scheme for the origin of the ring system is proposed; and certain specific characteristics of the former satellite from which this system apparently originated are examined. A major conclusion is that the Cassini division is a 'cleared path', which was left behind by the drifting zone of aggressive resonance with Iapetus. The present study uses data from Voyager-1 and Voyager-2 observations of the Saturn rings.
