The scanning photometer devised for the 1.93-m telescope of the Observatoire de Haute Province to conduct routine observations of the apparent double QSO 0957 + 561 A, B is characterized and illustrated with a diagram, and preliminary results demonstrating its performance are reported. The need for at least six years of observations to determine the temporal shift of the gravitational-lens images and to derive a more accurate value of the Hubble constant is explained, and the practicality of a light-weight automated photoelectric photometer mounted permanently at a side port at the Cassegrain focus is indicated. The optical system of the photometer and the photomultiplier detector (centered at wavelength 450 nm and having dark current less than 10 counts/sec at 20 C) permit eight scans of the QSO images followed by one scan of the reference star K5 in 23.04 sec. A similar device has been constructed for installation on the 1.52-m telescope at Calar Alto, Spain.
