Evidence for the existence of a ring around Uranus based on observations of the occultation of the star SAO 158687 on March 10, 1977 has been reported. In addition to the primary occultation of the star by the planet, twenty-two secondary occultations were recorded. These fall roughly into two groups: sixteen short occultations of about one second each at distances between 42,000 and 49,000 km from the center of the planet, and six occultations of 4 to 9 seconds at distances of 51,000 to 55,000 km. The symmetry of these occultations with respect to the planet may indicate the presence of a disk of large particles somewhat like the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, or the presence of multiple rings made up of small particles.
