A mission to study the Sun at close range, to explore the Sun's corona and magnetic field with in situ observations, would be highly valuable. Any such mission would be at risk for impact by the dust particles that populate the region near the Sun. Moving at the velocity attained in close orbit, even small dust particles can damage unprotected spacecraft components. By reviewing the current state of knowledge regarding such dust, this project hopes to provide some insight into the solar dust population. We find that both the quantity and location of the dust, while not known absolutely, are probably significant, and should be considered in mission planning. This talk will explore some of the sources of interplanetary dust, the forces that affect it, and where it likely resides in the near-solar region.
