The observational evidenced for synoptic period waves in the equatorial stratosphere is reviewed. The dynamic signatures of these waves and the capabilities and limitations of the various observational methods used to resolve them are examined, emphasizing recent developments. Kelvin waves, the mixed Rossby-gravity wave, the Rossby wave, the two-day wave, and quasi-inertial period oscillations are considered.
