The quiet-time average topology of the magnetosphere of the earth is considered in terms of the interaction between the solar wind and the geomagnetic field. Discussed topics in the review include the magnetopause, the plasmasphere, the proton radiation belt, wave-particle interaction, the electron radiation belt, excitation of waves, auroras, and the plasmamantle and the plasmasheet. Magnetospheres in other parts of the Solar System which have been studied by space probes are briefly described. The emphasis in the review is on basic physical processes as well as recent and comparatively noncontroversial advances in the fields listed above.
