Large area TOF detectors have been extensively used for low energy
particle identification. They mainly consist of arrays of scintillator
counters. New developments, based on multigap RPCs, are foreseen for the
incoming heavy ions experiments, where the bulk of particle production
is below 1-1.5 GeV/c.
