In the early 1980's, the reports of ultra high energy signals from astrophysical point sources led to the deployment of a new generation of detectors specifically designed to look for and study this radiation. The early results from these experiments about the existence of sources and the characteristics of the interactions of the radiation have been interesting and provacative, but not conclusive. This paper gives a review of the history of the field and a discussion of recent results.
