Numerical models and computational techniques for precision earth surface positioning using Doppler measurements of Transit satellite signals are described. Analytical techniques for interpreting signals, i.e., a beat signal and a reference signal, from Doppler geodetic instrumentation are detailed, including corrections for instrument effects and atmospheric refraction delays. Appropriate weights for the Doppler observations are formulated for obtaining minimum variance solutions. Attention is given to satellite orbit location and real-time broadcast ephemerides contained in the satellite signals. Applications of the positioning and navigational methods in Canada are discussed, noting the achievement of a 1 m accuracy for a stationary observer.
