An attempt is made to outline the major developments in the dynamics of the F region brought about by neutral winds, electric fields, vertical diffusion, and waves. Such topics as the generation of the dynamo and convection electric fields, which are conducted into the F region from outside, the neutral exospheric temperature, and the exchange of ionization between the ionosphere and the magnetosphere are touched upon only where studies of the F region plasma appear to have made useful contributions.
