Some implications of a Carnot cycle in a general relativistic system in thermal equilibrium are derived. Consideration of the efficiency of a Carnot engine acting between two volume elements of a fluid which are infinitesimally close together leads to the conclusion that a rigidly moving fluid in thermal equilibrium is isometric, with its four-velocity proportional to a timelike Killing vector field. The form of the Killing vector field obtained may then be used to derive the Tolman relation, and the expression obtained for the efficiency may be interpreted as proving the impossibility of thermal equilibrium in a Friedmann universe. The results thus support the theories of continuum thermodynamics.
