Some numerical experiments by Schempp of gas response to a rotating bar potential are repeated using a particle scheme to simulate the gas dynamics. Schempp's results are shown to be dependent on the disruptive way he turns on the bar. Quasi-static models unaffected by transients are computed. The shocks which develop are in significantly different positions from those of Schempp, and the bar rotation rate is shown to have no effect on whether the morphology is ringed or spiral. Furthermore the spiral structure is not confined to inside corotation, but extends outward past the outer Lindblad resonance. It is shown that inner rings and straight dust lanes require different sorts of bar field for their formation.
