Optical photometry of the superluminal radio source 0836 + 710 obtained from Oct. 1989 to Feb. 1992 is discussed. No variability of large amplitude was found until the end of 1991. A rapid flare was detected on Feb. 16, 1992 which had been preceded by lower activity since the beginning of Jan. 1992. If the high gamma-ray flux was a temporally limited event, the data suggest that the high-energy activity preceded the optical flare by about one month. The appearance of a new superluminal VLBI component at a distance of 0.5 mas is preceded for about 1994.1 based on these data.
