Venus Atmosphere: Rotation
Scientific paper
A simple explanation for the phenomenon of the superrotation of the atmosphere of Venus is given in the framework of an axisymmetric convective-diffusion model for the zonal angular momentum. The high values for the rate of zonal motion are maintained by a diffusion flow which is created by nonzonal, non-steady-state motions which tend to convert the atmosphere to a rigid body rotation regime. Here the angular momentum that is transferred by the meridional circulation has a tendency to be concentrated in the upper part of the atmosphere. The qualitative analysis is illustrated by numerical solutions which confirm that, depending on the ratio of the rate of meridional circulation and of the viscosity coefficient, a steady-state balance of the angular momentum can be reached for as strong a superrotation as one wants. An overall superrotation is a general property of all atmospheres that are heated near the equator and are cooled at the poles; it develops most strongly for slowly rotating planets with a global Hadley Cell.
