A model problem is developed which involves the motion of a small point mass in the gravitational field of two fixed centers and in the field of a force directly proportional to the distance from the moving point to the straight-line segment connecting the fixed points. The effect of the rotation of the gravitating points about their common center of inertia is partially taken into account. A detailed qualitative analysis of the motions of a passively gravitating point is given for the three-dimensional case. Four qualitatively different kinds of trajectory are distinguished in this case.
