A rapid method using pulsed magnetic fields for the measurement of basalt hysteresis parameters, both at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures, has been described. Results obtained using this method on a large number of samples indicate that the coercive force at 77 K, rather than the relative remanence, is a better parameter for delineating the composition and domain state of the magnetic grains in rocks.
