A pulsed photoelectron gun has been constructed to satisfy the beam specifications required by ``reaction microscope'' studies of atomic collisions [1,3]. Short pulses of electrons (<500 ps) are produced using GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure crystals. The laser diode for the gun operates at 650 nm and can generate up to 60 μA average current. Quantum efficiencies of 3% and a photocathode lifetime of one week have been achieved. To study the emission characteristics of the photoelectrons a novel imaging spectrometer has been constructed and first energy-distribution curves have been measured at moderate resolution. Computer simulations show, that an excellent energy (<1 meV) and angular resolution is attainable with such a spectrometer. .
