We combine three models to form a solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere model. According to the Hill-Siscoe [Hill et al., 1976; Siscoe et al., 2002] (H-S) model, the solar wind at L1 determines the transpolar potential over the polar caps. These values for the transpolar potential are shown to be consistent with the polar conductance predicted by the Nopper-Carovillano [Nopper and Carovillano, 1978] ionospheric model labeled N-C. The results for the transpolar potential are also shown to be in good agreement with both the Weimer[2005] model potential values and DMSP measurements for the 6-7 April 2000 magnetic storm. The Region-1 (J1) and Region-2 (J2) currents are estimated from the Siscoe[1982] S-RC ring-current circuit model, which is driven by the H-S transpolar potential. One can derive time-dependent solutions for J1 and J2 from this model with the resistor values being estimated from the ionospheric conductance used in N-C. These solutions for J1 and J2 act as input into N-C and the net penetration electric at equatorial latitudes is determined. Using this combined model we find that shielding occurs within 1h of onset during the main phase of the 6-7 April 2000 storm. Equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) are seen some ~ 1 h after the initial increase of the transpolar potential and are qualitatively consistent with the equatorial penetration electric field calculated by the combined model.
