P-wave attenuation anomalies in the lower mantle can be delineated by assuming that body-wave magnitude residuals, derived from teleseismic data, are due to structure near the mid-points of the rays. Many rays traversing a given region are used to minimise random errors in the data, after correction for source and receiver effects. Published data for North Atlantic ray paths are used to outline significant anomalies with scale lengths of the order of 500 km, giving magnitude residuals up to 0.1 mb unit. To achieve the observed residuals, the mean value of Q for short-period P-waves probably does not greatly exceed 1000 in the lower mantle under the North Atlantic.
