The theory of perturbations is applied to the matrix representation of the diffusion equation to obtain a reduced diffusion equation. The first elements of the I matrix, that is, the integral appearing in the perturbation matrix, are written out in a formula, which is then used (1) to investigate the role of winds and drifts in the variation of the lifetime of the nighttime F-region, due to its rising or falling relative to the region of effective recombinations, and (2) to refine the dependence of nighttime ionosphere lifetime on conditions in the upper atmosphere, expressing these conditions through the dependence on exosphere temperature in the Jacchia 1971 model.
