A preliminary statistical analysis and theoretical investigation has been made on the ionospheric Es-s over Wuchang, China. Wuchang Es-s occurs mainly on geomagnetically nondisturbed days. Related phenomena exist both before and after the occurrence of Es-s. It also tends to be related to the stratification phenomena due to acoustic gravity waves. The occurrence reaches its maximum at nearly 09 or 10 h local mean time. Over 50 percent of Es-s are recorded in summer months. Over 80 percent of Es-s records are obtained on geomagnetically non-disturbed days. An empirical formula has been found, which agrees well with observations. Besides geomagnetic activity and ionizing agencies, the control factors might be the background ionization and the absorption.
