A preliminary assessment of the IGRF-1990 in Mexico is carried out by comparing geomagnetic elements measured throughout Mexico and IGRF derived geomagnetic values. Mean differences of 10.6 nT, 24.4 nT, and -0.6' are obtained for total intensity, horizontal component, and declination (RMS deviations of 206 nT, 116 nT, and 18.7', respectively). The differences correlate with MAGSAT derived magnetic anomalies, e.g. they are associated with crustal sources. We conclude that the IGRF provides a satisfactory geomagnetic reference field for Mexico.
